3 Companies Using OpenShift To Propel Digital Transformation
The OpenShift container platform empowers digital transformation through a fast, customizable blueprint for modernizing legacy applications. Medium to large companies that want to continue to deliver new products, scale their solutions, and remain at the forefront of their industry must have a container solution that allows for scalability, rapid delivery, and customizable delivery.
OpenShift is a hybrid cloud platform for Kubernetes, an open-source container solution to deliver applications that work with blockchain technologies and complex artificial intelligence systems like IBM Watson®. OpenShift helps to simplify and automate the cloud-based capabilities of Kubernetes, making new releases, migration, and development much faster and easier. We take a look at three companies using OpenShift to propel their digital transformation.
Sabre
Travel technology giant Sabre is leveraging the OpenShift Container Platform as the foundation of its Next Generation Platform initiative. The new platform will enable the company to deliver more sophisticated, modern technology solutions for its various clients across all verticals within the travel and hospitality industry, including airlines, hospitality, and global businesses with high travel volumes.
Vish Saoji, Sabre CTO says, "The Next Generation Platform is the cornerstone of Sabre's long-term technology strategy … Red Hat has delivered the enterprise-hardened software environment we need to help drive our technology transformation, and this collaboration allows us to build upon that architecture and execute our plan."
The two companies will work together on product roadmap needs, with Red Hat fine-tuning their approach to meet Sabre's development standards.
Sabre clients will benefit by enjoying enhanced stability, world-class security, accelerated speed to market and the development of new capabilities such as new distribution capability (NDC)-enabled solutions. NDC is an International Air Travel Association (IATA) travel program that will eventually allow airlines to present fares as well as bundled ancillary products like upgrades, bag fees, Wi-Fi, food/beverage and other services based on traveler preferences, corporate policy and negotiated rates. This program will make it easier for travelers to compare flights and prices for a more personalized traveler experience.
So far, leveraging OpenShift has helped Sabre expand their global footprint to two new CoreConnect Hubs in Chicago and Dallas as of 2018, plus launch additional solutions to improve their transaction processing capabilities—an absolute necessity when processing roughly $8,000 in payments per second.
Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank is the world’s 16th largest bank, and one of the world leaders in financial technology. With developers all over the world, it is absolutely critical to have a central container solution and self-service features while offering top-tier security to protect sensitive financial information. Enter Fabric, the hybrid cloud system that allows Deutsche Bank’s global developers a suite of automated, self-service capabilities to deliver and scale their applications.
Tom Gilbert, Global Head of Cloud, Application, and Integration Platforms for Deutsche Bank says, “Our vision was for ‘Everything as a Service’ - to create a bubble where our people can’t tell if they’re building software for a bank or any of the software companies in the world. We wanted to be able to quickly take an idea to production while meeting the security and regulatory standards of the industry.”
Fabric supports a team of over 10,000 end users and continues to grow, while leveraging OpenShift as a powerful engine.
BMW
As a world leader in automotive engineering for over a hundred years, BMW continues to innovate both their production processes and their end-products.
BMW’s innovation featuring ConnectedDrive, the digital service powering features within BMW vehicles, was showcased at the RedHat Summit earlier this year.
Dr. Alexander Lenk, Lead Architect of Connected Vehicle, Digital Backend, Big Data, and blockchain for the BMW group explains that digital services are important for the company and its customers. Therefore, these digital services will be added to new cars as well as its existing fleet.
While the ConnectedDrive system has been in service for 20 years, it required a more advanced delivery system to deliver these applications and updates to over 12 million vehicles and support close to a billion weekly IT service requests.
In 2016, BMW began migrating their full application suite to OpenShift and support over 1,000 web-based apps for not only customers and vehicles, but also for factories, dealerships, and the full production and sales process.
Conclusion
OpenShift helps to power connectivity and cloud-based delivery worldwide, for leaders in industries across the board. By using OpenShift, these enterprise-level businesses are able to scale their operations, improve their service, and continue to scale and advance their technology platforms.
